چکیده

In the present study, 78 lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains were screened for the antagonistic activity against Campylobacter jejuni and 15 LAB strains with high bactericidal capacity were selected for further study through the analysis of the inhibition zone of LAB spent culture supernatant on the growth of C. jejuni. Among these strains, four isolates, Lactobacillus plantarum N8, N9, ZL5 and Lactobacillus casei ZL4 exhibited high adhesion ability to HT-29 cells. All the cell free supernatant (CFS) of these four strains contained high concentration of organic acid and their inhibition effects against C. jejuni were pH sensitive. Furthermore, these four strains could strongly antagonize the adhesion and invasion of C. jejuni to HT-29 cells and showed good tolerance to artificial gastric and small intestinal juices. This study suggests that Lactobacillus strains N8, N9, ZL4 and ZL5 could be used as potential probiotics in food applications against C. jejuni infection. 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Identification of lactobacilli residing in chicken ceca with antagonism against Campylobacter.

Bacteriocins produced by Lactobacillus salivarius have been recently recognized as a natural means to control Campylobacter and Salmonella in live poultry. This finding is of relevance since Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli are the predominant species isolated from poultry that are associated with human campylobacteriosis. In the present work, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from...

In vitro antagonistic activity evaluation of Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) combined with cellulase enzyme against campylobacter jejuni growth in co-culture.

The antibacterial effects of nine lactic acid bacteria (LAB) against Campylobacter jejuni were investigated by using agar gel diffusion and co-culture assays. Some differences were recorded between the inhibition effects measured with these two methods. Only two LAB, Lb. pentosus CWBI B78 and E. faecium THT, exhibited a clear anti- Campylobacter activity in co-culture assay with dehydrated poul...

Antibacterial Activity of Ethanol Extract from Some Thai Medicinal Plants against Campylobacter Jejuni

In this study, the forty Thai medicinal plants were used to screen the antibacterial activity against Campylobacter jejuni. Crude 95% ethanolic extracts of each plant were prepared. Antibacterial activity was investigated by the disc diffusion assay, and MICs and MBCs were determined by broth microdilution. The results of antibacterial screening showed that five plants have activity against C.j...

Characterization of intestinal lactobacilli as putative probiotic candidates.

AIMS To use antioxidative activity and antagonistic properties of lactobacilli against selected pathogens and members of the normal microflora as a basis for screening probiotic candidates. METHODS AND RESULTS Antagonistic activity of lactobacilli against target bacteria in both microaerobic and anaerobic environments was tested. Production of antagonistic metabolites (ethanol, hydrogen perox...

Novel Anti-Campylobacter Compounds Identified Using High Throughput Screening of a Pre-selected Enriched Small Molecules Library

Campylobacter is a leading cause of foodborne bacterial gastroenteritis worldwide and infections can be fatal. The emergence of antibiotic-resistant Campylobacter spp. necessitates the development of new antimicrobials. We identified novel anti-Campylobacter small molecule inhibitors using a high throughput growth inhibition assay. To expedite screening, we made use of a "bioactive" library of ...
